Heat-shrinkable cable accessories are critical components used to insulate, protect, and seal electrical connections in power distribution and transmission systems. They are widely applied in medium- and high-voltage cables to ensure reliability, safety, and longevity in harsh environments.

1. Heat-Shrinkable Cable Joints

Function:

Cable joints connect two or more cables while maintaining electrical continuity and mechanical strength. Heat-shrink joints use specially designed polymeric sleeves that shrink radially when heated, forming a tight, waterproof seal around the cable splice.

Materials:

Made from cross-linked polyolefin (XLPO) or ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), these materials offer excellent insulation, UV resistance, and thermal  stability. An inner adhesive layer melts during heating to ensure an airtight and moisture-proof bond.

Installation:

The joint sleeve is positioned over the prepared cable connection and heated evenly (using a torch or heat gun). As it shrinks, it conforms to the cable’s contours, eliminating air gaps and providing mechanical protection.

Advantages:

High dielectric strength and insulation resistance.

Resistance to environmental stressors (moisture, chemicals, abrasion).

Flexibility for irregular shapes and varied cable sizes.

Cost-effective and easy to install compared to cold-shrink alternatives.

2. Heat-Shrinkable Cable Terminations

Function:

Terminations are used to seal the end of a cable, connecting it to equipment (e.g., transformers, switchgear) or overhead lines. They prevent electrical leakage and environmental damage.

Design:

Terminations include stress control components (e.g., stress cones or graded layers) to manage electric field distribution at the cable’s end. Heat-shrink tubes, boots, and skirts are combined to create a complete sealing system.

Key Features:

Stress Relief: Built-in stress-relief layers avoid partial discharges and voltage spikes.

Sealing: Adhesive liners ensure waterproofing and corrosion resistance.

Durability: Withstands temperature extremes (-50°C to 120°C) and mechanical stress.

Applications:

Used in substations, renewable energy systems (wind/solar), industrial plants, and underground power networks.

Benefits of Heat-Shrink Technology

Quick Installation: Requires minimal tools and training.

Adaptability: Fits diverse cable diameters and configurations.

Long Service Life: Resists aging, ozone, and tracking.

Safety: Meets international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE).

Typical Use Cases

 Repairing damaged cable insulation.

 Extending or branching power lines.

Transitioning between underground and overhead cables.

Industrial environments with exposure to oils, fuels, or chemicals.
